5- Tips to Protect Driveway Pavement

Did you know how to maintain your new asphalt driveway? A new driveway is an investment that will need attention and upkeep. With some easy-care precautions, your new driveway will continue to look and function like new for many years to come.

We’re confident that this guide will help to protect your driveway pavement and make it long-lasting.

Remove any Debris

Regularly remove dirt, leaves, or rocks from your asphalt. Debris can obstruct drainages and hinder the water’s natural flow, making it stand. The collected water then seeps into the asphalt pavement and softens it. The softened asphalt will then be more vulnerable to holes and cracks.

Regular pavement sweeping helps monitor surface anomalies, enabling timely action to prevent issues from escalating. Also, guarantee that you instantly remove any traces of domestic chemicals, oil, or gas.

Keep Holes Patched

Occasionally, potholes can’t be avoided. If a problem arises, promptly address it to prevent further driveway and vehicle damage. When preparing for repairs, clear out any debris from the hole before filling it.

Trash, sticks, and other debris can gather inside the opening. After clearing it out, seal the pothole with a cold asphalt filler, then pack it firmly. Assemble for completion, and then seal.

Regular Seal Coating

When installing new asphalt driveways, seal coating should be done approximately two years after installation. Seal coating helps preserve the asphalt and maintain its original appearance. It protects the asphalt’s basal layer from sun-induced UV radiation damage. It also stops cracking and potholes from developing and scattering.

Seal coating can be done yourself, but you should do it professionally for the best outcomes. Seal coating should be restarted every few years to help enhance the appearance and durability of your asphalt surface. Before applying residential asphalt sealcoating services, the driveway must be cleaned and power washed.

Removing any stains caused by oil, transmission fluid, or other materials is necessary. This is completed by cleaning the area with a commercial cleaner, following these easy guidelines. After the colours are cleaned, you should power wash your driveway.

Power washing will force the stain-causing material further into the asphalt; thus, it is always best to clear the spots first. After power washing, the driveway should be allowed to dry entirely, and seal coating can start.

Prevent Leaks & Spills

Asphalt is an oil-based material. Transmission/power steering fluids, motor oil, gasoline, and antifreeze can seriously damage it.

These spills can erode the driveway’s surface and cause damage. It’s better to avoid parking leaky vehicles on your newly installed driveway. To prevent damage, clean up any spills using absorbent materials. Any holes left by any of these spills need asphalt sealing with a cold patch.

Routinely Shovel Pavement

Remove standing water or snow regularly during the winter. Once again, take preventive measures to shield your driveway investment. Clearing your driveway surface of standing water and snow can prevent freeze-thaw cycles from damaging it further.

Whether you shovel or plough snow, recognize your actions to prevent water damage. Therefore, it should be completed before the snow melts. If you’d prefer to work with a professional, hire an experienced team with the right equipment and knowledge in your area. This can stop additional damage to your driveway’s pavement. Save your time and effort!
